Running in the Rain

22 March 2008

Despite the appalling weather conditions, 200 runners came along to Sue Ryder Care - Thorpe Hall Hopice's first ever fun run.

Among those spurred on by a poignant reason to run was Samantha Butterwick (22), who was raising money with a group of friends in memory of Dean Ingram.

The popular Oundle man, who was cared for at Thorpe Hall, lost his fight against cancer of the gullet in January, aged just 30.

Samantha, who knew Mr Ingram from having worked with him at the Angel pub in the town, was joined by friends Paul Campbell (22), Neil Fox (19), Andrew Smith (28), Mandy Bonner (34), and Chloe O'Connell-Jones (12).

They wore matching T-shirts with the touching slogan, "In loving memory of Deano", and were raising money through sponsorship and collections at the Angel.

Shivering in the freezing conditions before the run, Samantha said: "It's cold, but hopefully it will go all right. We are just going to take the run easy together.

First runner home was Andrew Shackle
ton (28), whose wife Susan (31), a sister at Thorpe Hall, also took part.

Andrew, who finished in a blistering 17 minutes 57 seconds, said: "She's still out there somewhere. She's not quite so quick."

Thorpe Hall fund-raiser Helena Waters said it was hoped the event would raise about £2,000.
She said: "It looks like proving a success, so we will probably do another next year."

A big thank you to everyone who took part.
