University of Sheffield students have raised £10,000 for Sue Ryder Care’s international work by hitch-hiking 1,800 miles across Europe.
On Saturday, student representatives hitched over 400 miles to deliver the cheque in person to Ben Simms, Head of International.
The funds were raised by BUMMIT, an annual University of Sheffield event that involves 300 students hitch-hiking across Europe with just £15 to spend on travel! Five charities benefited from their efforts including Sue Ryder Care.
Ben comments: “The synergy between BUMMIT and Sue Ryder Care, both operating across Europe, is an obvious one, and students are especially inclined to think and act internationally. BUMMIT is an amazing achievement. It’s fantastic they chose to support our work in Europe. Our thanks to all who took part.”
Vanessa Lee, Chair of the BUMMIT organising committee: “Organising BUMMIT this year turned out to be the most rewarding of the three I have been involved in. Not only did we raise the most amount for charities but I got the opportunity to see and hear first hand how our money is going to be spent. Seeing the enthusiasm of the staff at Sue Ryder Care and their drive to help others was awe inspiring.”
This year’s route was from Sheffield to Tallinn (Estonia) and involved getting across Poland. Appropriately, the cheque was handed over at Sue Ryder Care-St John’s Hospice in the presence of Pauline Panter, Palliative Care Services Manager (East of England). Pauline has been very active in Sue Ryder Care’s international work, promoting Twinning links between St John’s Hospice and the Dom Sue Ryder Bydgoszcz, Poland.
