29 million reasons to care: aiming for a life changing partnership with BAE systems

4 February 2008

We have been short-listed for the next BAE Systems' Charity Challenge and are competing against two other UK charities to become BAE Systems charity of the year.  It will make an enormous difference to the lives of thousands of people if we win.  The partnership has the potential to deliver up to 40,000 volunteering hours and £2.6 million.

The 32,900 BAE Systems’ staff, spread across 67 UK sites, have just four weeks to learn about the three charities and cast their all important deciding votes.

Our dedicated team will be spending the next month working hard highlighting the 29 million excellent reasons why they should choose to support us.

29 million is the number of people in the UK affected by the life-changing conditions we care for including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Huntington’s Disease, Brain Injury and Cancer.

Eric Grounds, director of fundraising said: “The BAE Systems Charity Challenge partnership, which runs for 18 months, would make a huge difference to Sue Ryder Care, enabling us to help so many more people.

“And it’s not just Sue Ryder Care and the people we care for that will benefit. It will also provide more than 40,000 hours of varied volunteering opportunities for BAE Systems staff. In keeping with Sue Ryder Care’s ‘Perfect Fit’ approach to volunteering and the ethos that there is an opportunity to suit all, staff will be invited to demonstrate their skills and interests in a variety of short and long-term projects, from redecoration and gardening to art and music therapy sessions to business mentoring, international engineering projects, improving IT access at care centres and managing one of the charity’s 380 shops.

“We are delighted to have made it to the final three. We cannot stress enough what this partnership would mean to us and we are passionate about communicating that to BAE Systems staff.

“We help put back what those conditions take away, be it freedom, dignity or independence. There are more people who need us. With the support of BAE Systems and the Charity Challenge partnership behind us, we could increase the number of hours of specialist care we provide from 4million to 10million every year. The whole charity is willing BAE Systems staff to use their vote to support Sue Ryder Care - and change so many lives forever.

“Together we could make a real difference.”
