Sue Ryder Care - Homecare takes on community-based social care in Angus

17 April 2008

Sue Ryder Care, the national charity that specialise in the provision of neurological, palliative and home care services, has recently taken over Crossroads Angus services to provide a continuation of care to many people throughout Angus with complex needs, so they can remain in their own homes.  Crossroads Angus had been a significant provider of care in Angus for over 21 years, where it grew from being a relatively small organisation providing carer support, to a busy homecare service meeting complex health and social care needs.

The social care service that Sue Ryder Care - Homecare provides is designed to give people independence and choice in how they live and to allow them to stay with their family and friends.   In Angus we are currently delivering 800 hours of care to 117 people who need our support in their own homes, and in the wider community.

Staff from Crossroads Angus have transferred over to work for Sue Ryder Care - Homecare which has provided them with job security, and the opportunity for further training and career progression.  Importantly, this also provides service users with continuity of care, as they will continue to have their needs met by the same familiar staff.  Service users will continue to be offered tailored care packages depending on their different needs by Sue Ryder Care.

Sue Ryder Care - Homecare, which was established eleven years ago, works in partnership with other agencies, including Social Work Services and District Nurses, to ensure all of people's changing needs are catered for.

Our staff, who are all trained to a minimum of SVQ 2, provide personal care, including feeding, dressing, moving and handling people as well as escorting people to their education or jobs and picking up shopping and cleaning.

Angus Council's Convener of Social Work and Health, Councillor Ruth Leslie Melville said: "We welcome this move and hope that the new arrangement will continue and strengthen the previous good work which enabled people to receive care while remaining in their own homes."

Irene Lee, Head of Homecare New Business for Sue Ryder Care said: "We are absolutely delighted to extend our Homecare service into Angus.  Sue Ryder Care is dedicated to helping the people in our care to get the best out of life, by caring for all of their needs, be they social, psychological, physical or spiritual. We believe that by helping people to make the choice to remain at home, often surrounded by families and friends, we are living up to the charity's vision of ‘care that liberates lives'."

"We are equally committed to building effective relationships with local health and social services to provide the best care possible and look forward to working together in the future."
