Celebratory CD launch in aid of Sue Ryder Care

28 March 2008

Local charity Sue Ryder Care – The Chantry is thrilled to announce details of a very exciting CD launch.   Following donations from the Ipswich community, a special CD to be sold in aid of the specialist healthcare charity is ready to hit the shelves.  To celebrate the Sue Ryder Care team are holding a launch party on Friday 18th April at the Ipswich care centre. Featuring the song ‘Why Me’ written by Richard Swan an attendee of the successful music therapy sessions run at The Chantry, the CD will be available across the county in Sue Ryder Care shops and at The Chantry itself.  Richard has written and recorded a song drawing on lyrics he began three decades ago to complete ‘Why me’, a love song dedicated to his wife that broaches the effect multiple sclerosis has had on his relationship.

Richard, is a keen attendee of the extremely successful 1-2-1 and group music therapy sessions run at specialist neurological care centre Sue Ryder Care - The Chantry, which enable residents and day care visitors to communicate through music.  Music Therapist Maria King, who leads the sessions at the centre, persuaded Richard, in a series of 1-2-1 sessions, to revisit the song, which he first wrote 30-years-ago.
Richard, who has been involved with bands and music all his life, wanted to express his experiences following his diagnosis through song.  Working with Maria, Richard has now added a new verse to the original song focusing on his life today.  The song illustrates the changes Richard encountered as his life was transformed so dramatically. ‘Why Me’ has now been recorded by a group Maria formed solely for this project. Richard’s daughter Jenny has even designed a cover for the CD single, and the owner of the company she works for Healey's, an Ipswich based printer, has kindly agreed to produce the sleeve for the first release of the CD, and thanks to the generosity of local supporters the CD is now being produced. Richard, a big Freddie Mercury fan, commented: “Taking part in music therapy at The Chantry has had a huge impact on me. Getting used to attending day care wasn’t easy for me, but Maria’s sessions have been a great tool to allow me to settle in and make the most of the time I spend here. Sue Ryder Care has transformed many things for myself and my family and it would be fantastic to be able to raise as much as possible for them.”   The launch party will take place between 1pm-3pm on Friday 18th April at Sue Ryder Care – The Chantry, Chantry Park, Hadleigh Road, Ipswich, 1P2 OBP.  Attendees will be treated to a live performance of ‘Why Me’.  If you are interested in attending please contact Suzanne Ellington, by 11th April, on 01353 663357 or suzanne.ellington@suerydercare.org.
